The Kia lineup underwent several changes for the 2019 model year, with several of their vehicles getting completely redesigned or at least getting a minor facelift or refresh. The always-popular Kia Optima was of the latter, receiving some design enhancements both inside and out alongside a host of new technologies and features. The Optima was already a strong entry into the midsize sedan segment, but we want to see how well it measures up to one of its biggest competitors after its refresh, so we’ve decided to compare the 2019 Kia Optima vs 2019 Hyundai Sonata.

The Hyundai Sonata has quickly risen through the ranks of the segment the past few years to become one of the Optima’s fiercest competitors. In order to see how they fare against one another, we compiled several of the most important specifications into the table just below.

Advantages of the 2019 Optima

As you can see with just a simple glance at the table, these two vehicles are nearly identical as far as specifications are concerned. They might not look anything alike, and they might offer a different suite of tech and features, but beneath the hood they might as well be powered by the same engine. The first two rows showcase the fact that the Optima and Sonata both deliver 185 horsepower alongside 178 pound-feet of torque. So, in a heads-up race, these two sedans would be neck and neck.

You can tell that the vehicles are in fact different by looking at the second half of the table though. As the third row depicts, the Sonata does offer a slightly larger trunk, permitting an extra 0.4 cubic feet of space for groceries or luggage or what have you. However, the fourth row showcases the real advantage between these two, and it’s in favor of the Optima. Our Kia sedan offers an extra 14.6 cu. ft. of space for you and your passengers to stretch out and get comfortable in.
