Each year J.D. Power performs a number of different studies. One of the most exciting and important is the Vehicle Dependability Study, which for 2018 was just completed and announced. The VDS is an industrywide study that looks at reported issues and comments from the past twelve months submitted by owners of vehicles that have been on the road for three years. So, for this year, that’d be 2015 model year vehicles. While the all-new 2018 Kia Rio is available now, and it’s starting to look like an even better option in the small car segments as owners seem to be pretty happy with the 2015 model.

“The results of the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study demonstrate Kia’s continued commitment to quality and in building world-class products that offer tremendous value to our customers. The Rio is yet another example of how far the entire Kia model line-up has progressed, and this kind of quality is tangible evidence of our long-term strategy to enhance the Kia ownership experience.”

In this study, a vehicle’s dependability is determined by calculating how many problems are experience across 100 vehicles, represented by a unit they’ve dubbed PP100. Therefore, scoring works out similarly to golf, in that the lower a score is the better. Rio ranked highest among small cars with a score of 103 PP100, thanks to such a low score.

But the Rio wasn’t the only thing to get excited about this year. Additionally, the Kia brand as a whole has seen improvements in the test. Since the 2016 Vehicle Dependability Study, the Kia brand as a whole has improved its rang by twelve positions, climbing all the way to second place among Non-Premium brands.
