We’re mostly focusing on 2019 models right now as they continue to become available, but we got a bit of news about one of our 2018 models and thought it too good to pass up. Several Kia vehicles have been awarded the Top Safety Pick Plus designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Kia Rio has not yet been one of them. In fact, no member of the IIHS’s minicar segment ever has. That is, until the 2018 Kia Rio. This incredible safety rating just goes to show how dependable Kia vehicles are, including their fantastic safety features.

“The Rio may have a small footprint, but it’s a big performer in all other areas, including driving dynamics, style, features, and now safety accolades. Being the first automaker to establish a TSP+ in the minicar segment is further proof that Kia is dedicated to improving the quality and integrity of our world-class model line.”
– Orth Hedrick, Executive Director of Car Product & Telematics, Kia Motors America
We’ve given you the rundown on how a vehicle earns Top Safety Pick+ designation in the past so we won’t bog you down in the details again, but we’re extremely happy with the Rio’s results. When equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking and LED highlights, the Rio scores high enough to be the first and thus far only minicar to ever win the award! These are just two of the safety features that make up the 2018 Kia Rio, though. Others include the rear-view camera system, electronic stability control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, hill-start assist control and vehicle stability management among many others.
