We can talk about safety features and prevention methods all day, but unless the institutes that tell consumers how safe a vehicle is give our automobiles the nod it all means nothing. That’s why we were extremely pleased to discover that two of our new 2018 model year vehicles earned the highest safety rating possible from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, AKA the IIHS. But which models earned the designation? The 2018 Kia Soul & 2018 Kia Sportage.
“Kia’s world-class lineup continues to earn quality, reliability and safety awards at an increasing rate and these IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus ratings for Soul and Sportage reflect Kia’s continuous improvement and effort to improve all aspects of safety.”
– Orth Hedrick, Vice President of Product Planning, Kia Motors America
Top Safety Pick Plus
The highest rating that the IIHS hands out to new vehicles is the Toyota Safety Pick Plus, or TSP+. In order to earn this designation, a vehicle has to achieve “good” ratings in all five of the crashworthiness tests performed on the vehicles. Those tests include small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength and head restraints. In addition to this, a vehicle must earn either “advanced” or “superior” in the front crash prevention category, and either “acceptable” or “good” headlights.
The 2018 Kia Soul and Sportage models, when equipped with high-intensity discharge headlights – which are only available on certain trim levels and packages, passed these requirements, thus earning themselves TSP+ designations.
